Wellbeing Week

In light of Wellbeing Week, Alice Tait provides some tips on how to look after yourself at university

Commencing on the 22nd June, we will be celebrating the second year of Wellbeing Week. Having originated in Jersey, Channel Islands, the week has evolved into a worldwide event, and for good reason. Wellbeing Week aims to create an Awareness Week hosting a variety of individual events, including the ‘Leaders in Wellbeing Summit’ which truly honours practitioners and charities who are advocating the importance of wellbeing.

So, what are some essential top tips to follow in order to improve your own wellbeing?

Wellbeing Week aims to create an Awareness Week hosting a variety of individual events, including the ‘Leaders in Wellbeing Summit’

Firstly, sleep! It seems obvious but developing a good sleep pattern is vital for wellbeing. As our schedules become crazier than ever, it is crucial that we aim to get eight hours of sleep every night – trust me you will feel so much better for it. Try to avoid any caffeinated drinks in the evening and consider enjoying a mug-full of herbal tea like chamomile or peppermint.

You’ve probably heard this a thousand times before but switch off your phone! Or any form of blue light for that matter at least two hours before heading to bed. Blue light emitted from electronic screens stimulates the brain and suppresses the sleep – inducing hormone melatonin being produced. Instead, why not read a book? Studies have indicated that reading before bed can reduce stress levels, relax your muscles and reduce your heart rate. Making you ready to drop-off in a blink of an eye.

Secondly, get some exercise. This does not necessarily mean hitting the gym with all the new and perky January members, it could just be popping into town to pick up some groceries or walking somewhere you would usually get the bus or a taxi to. If you want some privacy and have the room at home, YouTube have a seemingly endless number of videos for every form of exercise imaginable. My favourite is Yoga with Adrienne for whenever I am feeling in the need of a good stretch.

improving your wellbeing does not mean wholly altering your life, any small change can have a significantly beneficial effect

Finally, why not start a diary? Having an outlet to organise and articulate your thoughts can be a fantastic way to improve your mental wellbeing. Especially during stressful times in our lives, keeping a diary can reduce anxiety and stress levels and give a sense of control to your surroundings.

As we anticipate Wellbeing Week this year, we must remember that improving your wellbeing does not mean wholly altering your life, any small change can have a significantly beneficial effect.
