Tomorrow is the last day to apply for Exeter’s biggest Hackathon, taking place at the University this weekend.
Hosted by Exeter Entrepreneurs and Major League Hacking, EXHACK gives students from across the country the chance to pitch their ideas to a panel of esteemed judges.
Applications close on Thursday 26 January, ahead of the weekend-long event based in the University’s A&V Hub.
Any student with an idea for a product, business or app is welcome to take part, Exeter Entrepreneurs’ Theo Malki told Exeposé – although some experience in technology, business, design and branding is useful.
Students can enter in teams or individually, giving them the chance to be matched up with others who can help develop their idea.
“I will be taking part in the event myself as I have an idea for an application,” he explained, “but studying marketing, I lack knowledge in design or tech.”
“I believe it’s an amazing opportunity to meet people from across the country and world who can help turn my idea into a reality with the help of professional mentoring and feedback on the way.”
The event kicks off on Friday at 6pm. After check in and introduction, attendees pitch ideas and are formed into teams. Over the weekend, teams take part in various workshops and mentor meetings, before presenting their ideas. Judges are set to announce their decisions at 6pm on Sunday – with three teams granted top prizes from MLH.
“If you only ever go to one hackathon in your life, make sure it is this one,” Last year’s winner Matt Breech told Exeposé.
The event boasts a “really diverse, exciting environment,” he added. “I attended last year with no team and no idea to build, but I was instantly welcomed and found an incredible team to develop an innovative fresh food delivery concept, which ended up coming first.
“However it wasn’t the success that stuck with me, but the skills I developed and the network of like-minded people I gained.”

Students not taking part in the event are more than welcome to come along and spectate, especially during the final presentations on Sunday, Malkin added.
