Students’ Guild cancels annual Freshers’ Ball

by Emma Hussain

Sep 25, 2019 – by Emma Hussain

Exeter Students’ Guild announced this afternoon the cancellation of the 2019 Freshers’ Ball. The event had been scheduled for the evening of Sunday 29 September. The Guild were still publicising the event on social media as recently as yesterday, 24 September.

In a statement, the Guild announced the decision to cancel the event “was made due to low ticket sales” which “would result in the event being to a lower standard than desired by students attending, as well as the kind of event the Guild would like to host”.

Tickets had been on sale for several weeks at a cost of £35. The Students’ Guild confirmed that all students who had purchased a ticket will receive a full refund in 3-5 working days. All refund information has been made available on the Guild website.

They also announced a cheaper replacement event to be held on the same night, Sunday 29 September, at the Lemon Grove. This event will feature the Friday Flava DJs originally scheduled to appear at Freshers’ Ball, with students who had bought a Ball ticket being eligible for free entry and a complimentary drink. For any other attendees, entry will be £3.

Rapper Professor Green was scheduled to headline the original event. In a statement published on their website, the Students’ Guild wrote: “We are clearly very disappointed by this and there is much for us to learn through this experience; we remain committed to continue bringing you the best possible experience at every opportunity.”
