Single Review: McFly – Happiness
Katie Jones reviews McFly’s latest single, Happiness.
The first single from McFly’s upcoming comeback album, ‘Happiness’ is the fun, carefree pop that is so classically McFly. They mix an upbeat melody with cheesy lyrics for a joyful song reminiscent of their 2012 single ‘Love is Easy’ in terms of message but with a much more modern production.
McFly delighted fans last year with the announcement of their first show at the O2, a UK and South America tour, and the release of ‘The Lost Songs’ (a collection of demos that would have become their sixth album). After 10 years, McFly are finally releasing their sixth studio album ‘Young Dumb Thrills’ this November.
perfect soundtrack for a barbeque on a sunny evening or the road trip down the A303 to Exeter.
‘Happiness’ may not be revolutionary pop, but it succeeds in putting a smile on your face. The simple chorus is easy to pick up and sure to get everyone singing along, making it the perfect soundtrack for a barbeque on a sunny evening or the road trip down the A303 to Exeter. The swirling horns and layered production demonstrate how McFly have blended the more electronic sound of ‘Above the Noise’ (2010) with the acoustic sincerity of their early albums. When Tom sings “It’s like hearing a love song and jumping inside it”, he is perfectly describing the effect of listening to ‘Happiness’.
