Exeter Northcott has revealed three brand new productions will be arriving at the theatre in 2021.

After many live shows were cancelled in 2020 due to Covid-19, the announcement brings hope for the reopening of theatres.

The Honey Man, initially the theatre’s first new production, will open in June after cancelling their March dates because of lockdown restrictions. Written by Tyrone Huggins and directed by Devon-based Alix Harris, it tells the tale of an unlikely friendship between an ageing West Indian recluse and a sixteen-year-old heir to a country manor house.

Audiences will be treated to the theatre’s second new production, Antigone, in May. A collaboration between the Northcott’s professional team and Exeter University students, the show pits a teenage girl against the power of the state in a topical story of “strong man” leaders and citizen power.

The final installment of the new productions will hit the stage at the end of June. To close the programme, the theatre will present an adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s Friend or Foe, directed by their very own Artistic Director, Daniel Buckroyd.

the year ahead will see a broad range of our region’s creative voices coming through.

Artistic Director, Daniel Buckroyd

Daniel Buckroyd said, “It feels more important than ever that we platform the work of home-grown talent and partner with communities and locally-based creatives right here in Devon. These Exeter Northcott productions will sit alongside a programme of work emerging from projects with local artists communities and young people so the year ahead will see a broad range of our region’s creative voices coming through”.

The shows have all been planned with social-distancing measures in place to ensure the safety of the audience and staff.
