Just when we thought the present giving season was over, February brings with it Valentine’s Day – another moment of present-buying panic for those in love or hoping to find love on the 14th. Being a student on a budget can add some extra challenges, but fear not… I have a range of ideas that are affordable and meaningful, and suitable for all relationship types and budgets:

For the ‘newly in a relationship’ couples and even long-term couples:

You guys probably should know each other quite well by now, but that doesn’t mean gift giving is any easier!

Try taking something you know they like and make it a couple’s thing. Do they love a certain film? Why not have a movie night with snacks and cosy up on the sofa? This is both low cost and thoughtful – you can even tailor the snacks to the movie! Star Wars themed cookies anyone?

You could book an experience together, which is much more environmentally friendly than some gifts!

Perhaps buy a card game or board game related to a hobby they have or something they adore. It could even be a good chance to get to know your significant other better if you are new to the relationship. Football themed monopoly is always a shout!

Scrap the paper cards and instead show your love by exploring the beaches and national parks in Devon! Love for the environment is also important too! If you would like to splash the cash, you could book an experience together, which could be much more environmentally friendly than gifting unnecessary bits and bobs.

Situationship or crush:

Now these might be even more challenging to buy for, but if you are certain you want to give them a little something then try these:

Go traditional: a small bouquet of flowers or a box of chocolates is a clear way of communicating how you feel, especially if they haven’t been getting the message!

Show you care: have they gone on about something they’ve had their eye on? If it is in your budget, why not buy it?

Our friends should be shown some love!

Friendships:

Even our friends should be shown some love! A simple sticky note on the fridge for your flatmates to say how much you appreciate them or maybe going for a stroll by the quay with your course mates is a great way to celebrate the day, without feeling the pressure to be in a relationship instead.

All the single pringles:

Even if you decide to spend the day alone, that doesn’t mean it should be spent eating pints of ice cream under tonnes of blankets – unless of course, you want to! How about making your favourite meal or heading to a café you’ve been desperate to try out?

No matter what you do or where you spend your money, just remember it’s the thought that counts.
