Valentine’s Day is a day to celebrate love. Films are no exception to this theory, with most films being besotted by the theme of love. In that mood, here are some films which will put you in the mood for romance in time for Valentine’s Day.
When Harry Met Sally (1989) by Rob Reiner
A classic romcom known for ages. When Harry Met Sally deals with the idea of individuals evolving before they are right for each other. Harry and Sally meet multiple times before becoming friends, and their friendship allows them to develop a strong understanding of each other. This foundation is what makes their relationship so appealing to us as viewers. With the final monologue depicting the phrase ‘to be known is to be loved’.
The Lunchbox (2013) by Ritesh Batra
The Mumbai tiffin system is famous for its accuracy; however, a misplaced tiffin develops a friendship between a young housewife and an elderly man on his way to retirement. Irfan Khan and Nimrat Kaur give quietly excellent performances as people who are slowly falling in love with someone they have never met. This film will have you hoping for something misplaced in your own life. Additionally, be warned that you will feel very hungry watching the different lunchboxes.
Letters to Juliet (2010) by Gary Winick
A lesser-known cheesy romcom with a unique premise of reuniting lovers from 1957. What I believe makes this movie endearing is the actress’s charm, as well as the incredible true story that inspired the film. The love story in this movie feels believable, even if it does have its fair share of tropes. The characters feel realised, and the writing is tight. However, the true strength comes from the older couple finding each other and giving the phrase ‘love will never die’ a new meaning.
