Connor Woodsford, online writer, delves into Troye Sivan’s latest single ‘Party’ and what this could mean for the singer’s upcoming album.

Australian pop superstar Troye Sivan, known for his global hits such as ‘Rush’ and ‘One Of Your Girls’, alongside his feature on Charli XCX’s ‘talk talk’, returned with his new single ‘Party’ on 17th September, leading up to the release of his fourth studio album She’s The Best. The first single, which shares its name with the album, reintroduces us to the softer music of Blue Neighbourhood-era Troye, but ‘Party’ brings an entirely new energy, comparable to that of ‘Rush’ and the SWEAT Tour.
It shows what queer culture and the ‘liberating space’ of nightlife would look like in a different time
The majority of the song is about as simple as you could get lyrically, with Sivan repeating the lines ‘party in the park, party in the bush, party under the bridge’ and so on. Despite this simplicity, the energy-ridden track, which samples Madonna’s 2000 smash hit ‘Music’, rivals some of his biggest hits in its effectiveness in communicating the high-energy dance-pop vibe that he has become so well-known for.
However, where the true gem lies within this song, is its accompanying music video. Filmed at a castle in Berkeley, Gloustershire, and featuring a voice-over cameo by acclaimed actor Sir Ian McKellen, the video shows Sivan in a traditionally medieval setting and clothing, but switches things up by accompanying him with an entourage of dancers. It shows what queer culture and the ‘liberating space’ of nightlife would look like in a different time, something that Sivan took particular interest in. With the mix of a softer, more mellow sound and this new energetic dance track, the arrival of She’s the Best on 9th October could see one of Sivan’s most diverse albums yet.
