As we approach the colder months, the feeling of tucking into your favourite warm, homemade meal or sweet treat cannot be beaten, whether that’s stews, crumbles, or my personal favourite: butternut squash soup.
As someone with a common food allergy, I find it hard to eat out without having to resort to the same dishes over and over. So, I have found solace in home-cooking. Yes, it is vigorous work, especially after a long day of lectures and seminars but I promise you the hassle is worth it!
Maybe controversially, I am not a fan of pumpkin or various pumpkin spice flavoured things but butternut squash, if done right is amazing. It’s simplistic, hearty, and full of cosy autumnal flavours. You can either make it traditional and creamy or add a variety of warming spices such as ginger, nutmeg, and cinnamon, – all of which are associated with autumn – to give a deeper range of flavour making it perfectly versatile too!

There’s just something about sitting down for a luscious bowl of homemade soup and fresh crusty bread slathered with butter that reminds me that sometimes summer is not the best season and I should welcome the fresh chill in the air with open arms.
Donning those fluffy socks and digging out those comfort blankets to tuck into a bowl of home-cooked comfort food is healing for the soul – especially after a long day of study. Top that off with a sticky, gooey cinnamon bun and I would be in heaven!
