English Society Winter Ball ’24 (Phoebe Andrews)

With November in full swing, it can only mean one thing. Winter is on the way, and with that comes winter balls! But an alarming number of decisions come with the excitement; outfits, which ball to go to, budgets? Well look no further – this is my guide on how to navigate winter balls.

If you’re part of several societies, there may be multiple options for balls to attend and choosing can be tough. Many balls are themed so check society pages, as a good theme may be a deal breaker. Balls are a great way to chat to friends and people in your society you may not have met yet, so when deciding which ball to attend, consider which you’d feel most comfortable at to make the most of the night.

Once you have your ball attendance decided, time to focus on my personal favourite thing – outfits! Balls are formal so stick to the dress code as well as to any possible theme. But remember to wear what makes you feel comfortable and allows you to enjoy your night as much as possible. If there is no theme for your ball, you could choose a winter colour such as a deep red or an icy blue. Sites like Jovani have great style tips for winter balls!

These sorts of events can quickly become expensive though, between tickets, outfits, accessories and everything else, the price can look daunting. If this is a concern, having a budget can do wonders. Charity shops can be the perfect place to find a great, stylish outfit for cheaper. This can be a game changer when trying to keep to a budget.

But remember to wear what makes you feel comfortable and allows you to enjoy your night as much as possible

Most importantly, enjoy yourself and make the most of having the opportunity to attend a fabulous event!
