Ukrainian teachers are supporting a special University of Exeter Course teaching people about Ukraine’s culture and language.

Leader of the course and trained opera singer Iryna Ilnytska has taught classes since the start of the Russian invasion. Iryna studies linguistics at Kyiv Linguistic University in Ukraine and Zurich University.

An online version of the course will be made available from 7th November for anyone over 18 with no previous experience of the language required.

Iryna’s work is supported by experts in Ukraine who are providing teaching resources and materials. Iryan initially planned to use the language textbook Krok BY Olesia Palins’ka and Oksana Turkevych.

However, it was not available online or in shops. It was only in stock in Lviv in Western Ukraine and was not deliverable to the UK.

After emailing the authors, they sent her a PDF version of the textbook to be used in the class free of charge.

I believe that peace will come to Ukraine and that the Ukrainian language will be in a big demand during work to rebuild the country

Iryna Ilnytska

Iryna said: “It is really special to me to be able to teach these courses, although it is sad people around the world are learning about Ukraine because of war […] I believe that peace will come to Ukraine and that the Ukrainian language will be in a big demand during work to rebuild the country, and the whole world will want to help”

She added: “I’m so happy and grateful for the support of Olesia and Oksana.”
