When Britney Spears sang “I’m A Slave 4 U”, I’m pretty sure she wasn’t singing about the press and tabloids. Even so, media outlets will not stop harassing and profiting from traumatic events, including mental health problems and her recent divorce from Sam Asghari. The constant surveillance of Britney’s life demonstrates how the media, and their audiences will never actually view celebrities as real people. Some may say that celebrities “do it to themselves” as they’ve chosen to have a life in the spotlight. How would you feel if someone filmed and profited from your mental breakdown?

The issue with the media’s coverage of Spears is how constant and intimidating it is. Despite the forty-one-year-old releasing one new song after a sustained hiatus, the tabloids have failed to speak about her music. There are limited reviews of the single itself. In recent years, Britney Spears’ name has never actually trended for her music. Instead, the press surveils her life, watching her every move to see what they can leech onto next. Although some parts of her life need to be known, such as the conservatorship, not all need to be displayed on the front page of a newspaper. Arguably, the conservatorship is one of the only media which is something people need to know about. Legal cases like Britney’s prove that budding child stars’ futures and rights must be protected.

Though the treatment Britney Spears receives from the press isn’t acceptable, it isn’t particularly surprising. From Diana, the Princess of Wales, to now with Spears, the media has never been known for its kindness. The constant harassment and mistreatment of celebrities prove that the media will never be on the side of their celebrity victims. If the press can create a story out of them, they will never be seen as actual people. Britney Spears and other celebrities will be the tabloids’ puppets until they are used for all their worth.
