I went into this movie knowing the title alone- so I expected to watch Sydney Sweeney flounce around a mansion with a feather duster for an hour and half. Safe to say, I was pleasantly surprised by this movie.
My favourite part of this movie is the storytelling – I found the hiding of crucial aspects of all 3 main characters kept you on your toes: the young cleaner’s dark backstory of murder, the sweet husband shockingly turning out to be a maniacal abuser, and the ‘insane’ housewife’s past of having to flee from him. I did initially see Seyfreid’s performance as wooden, having no chemistry with any of the other characters – even her daughter. However, the slow discovery of exactly why her character acts this way makes the constant tension in the room worth it.
However, easily the worst part of his movie was that ‘what the fuck?’ ending – Sweeney’s character deciding to throw herself back into the situation she’s just narrowly survived, then immediately cutting to credits soundtracked by an ‘edgy’ Taylor Swift song seemed so cheap. I do feel as though if they wanted to leave open the story for the sequel which is confirmed to be coming, they could have at least saved the predicable, cringy self sabotage of the main character. It’s the sort of thing that takes a film like this from a solid watch, down to something you’d expect to find in a clearance bin, or in the back catalogue of a streaming site.
Nonetheless, despite the unfavourable ending, the film’s grit and enjoyable storytelling made it a pleasant enough watch for me to see it as a 3.5/5.
