Art + Lit = Comics

While superhero films have been enjoying unprecedented success at the box office in the last decade, the source of characters like Iron Man, Batman and Spider-Man remains culturally underappreciated, particularly in Britain. The comic book, or graphic novel, is often viewed critically as empty fluff for children. However, it is an art form full of […]

Spawn of Justice – On superheroes and tone

The phrase ‘dark and gritty’ usually inspires groans among fans of superhero films. The Dark Knight and Logan may have proven you can craft fantastic grounded stories, but the fact remains that superheroes come from colourful, zany worlds. Marvel’s dominance of the industry has partially been due to its family-friendly house tone, peppering action with […]

Emasculated Bond

Piers Morgan, the nation’s least favourite breakfast show host and all-round unpleasant bloke, has once again made some ridiculous comments in his constant quest for attention. This time, he’s attacking critically-acclaimed James Bond actor Daniel Craig for carrying his baby daughter in a papoose, using the bizarre hashtag ‘#emasculatedbond’. Beyond the fact that James Bond […]
