Freya Jhugroo writes about the benefits of language assistants for students in Spain; translated by Anna Assens Gonzalez.

During my gap year I was a language and culture assistant in Valladolid for the school Maristas de la Inmaculada. I really enjoyed the experience. In this article, I will talk about how students in these schools benefit from language assistants. I will also comment on the positive and negative aspects for the teaching assistant.

In my opinion, students at schools that have a language assistant benefit greatly from the experience. Firstly, schools in Spain place too great an emphasis on memorising vocabulary and grammar. This means that students only learn these elements of the language as a short-term resource for the exam. Often forgetting most of it immediately after the test. It is a pity since learning in such ways leads to most students not enjoying language learning and leads to them stopping once they have graduated. However, a language assistant can change this experience. Teaching assistants give students the opportunity to apply their language outside of exam conditions and learning the accent, colloquialisms, and culture specific to the assistant’s country of origin. When I was working as a teaching assistant, I always created games with my students using vocabulary on the topic they were studying. I was very successful because I believe (at least I hope) that most students enjoyed my classes.

On the other hand, the assistant also benefits from their job. For starters, gaining valuable and transferable skills from the teaching position. For example, I have improved my organisation, creativity, and ability to improvise. In addition, I had a good opportunity to improve my Spanish, meet new people and learn from a new and more relaxed culture. Also, since I only worked four days a week and received a good salary, I travelled to many parts of Spain. Spain is an amazing country, with stunning views and very welcoming locals.

However, like all experiences, there are some disadvantages to being a language assistant. I am very glad that, except for some home sickness I did not have to go through the experiences that I summarise in this article. I am grateful that my school was very professional and my colleagues gave me a lot of support and advice. However, I will talk about some disadvantages that my friends told me about; they had the same employment as me but in different schools.

For starters, some autonomous regions in Spain always pay their assistants very late. Because of this, their financial situation was very unstable and they felt very stressed during that time. In addition, some schools will occasionally take advantage of teaching assistants and demand too much from them. After all, assistants are only assistants and not teachers.

Despite this, I think the idea of language assistants is very good and I recommend this work to all language students; meanwhile, assistants sometimes need to make sure they defend themselves.
