Following the Taliban’s rapid advancements in Afghanistan this August, the UK government announced that a resettlement scheme would be enforced over the next five years in order to home 20,000 Afghan refugees.

However, due to limited funding and high rents, only two houses in Exeter are currently being offered to those fleeing the Taliban. Despite a few more properties being available, these have been rejected due to a decision from Exeter City Council meaning that the rent of these houses must match the local housing allowance.

“It is very challenging to get private accommodation at affordable prices in Exeter, so that is the biggest challenge we have at the moment.”

In response to this housing shortage, Counsellor Williams stated, “It is very challenging to get private accommodation at affordable prices in Exeter, so that is the biggest challenge we have at the moment.”

The City Council continue to appeal to those with properties available to rent within the appropriate price bracket to get in touch and to support this nationwide settlement scheme.
