2025 has been an intense year for gaming. This year has seen big indie releases – Team Cherry’s Silksong and Toby Fox’s Deltarune – and huge announcements and successes from gaming giants Nintendo and Sony.

As we come to the colder months, I for one, am keen to find a good game to settle down with. There’s nothing quite like changing into some comfy pyjamas, pouring a steaming cup of hot chocolate, and curling up under a blanket to play your new favourite game. I’m here to give you my favourite autumn gaming recommendations, one new and one old.

As previously mentioned, Team Cherry’s highly anticipated Hollow Knight: Silksong was released recently, quickly crashing online storefronts such as Steam and Nintendo’s e-Shop upon its release. Gaining a 9/10 IGN rating, the metroidvania game is a perfect choice if you’re looking for something long, fulfilling, and engaging. Set as a sequel to the critically acclaimed Hollow Knight, you manoeuvre through puzzles and boss fights in an unfamiliar fantasy world, freeing its haunted inhabitants. While notably more difficult than my other choice, Silksong is packed full of gorgeous autumnal graphics and colourings, an emotional instrumental soundtrack, and engaging gameplay; an ideal choice for anyone looking for an intellectual distraction from those pesky deadlines.

Another autumnal favourite of mine is Night in the Woods, an indie story game developed by Infinite Fall and Secret Lab. Set in the quaint imaginary town of Possum Springs, you play as Mae Borowski, a university dropout, as she returns home. The game takes place in autumn, and as you watch the season develop, you are forced to uncover the secrets of this quiet, idyllic community. Mae navigates old friendships, topics of mental health, and a lot of autumnal adventure. Night in the Woods is charming, emotional, and a quintessential choice for the season.
