It is no secret that uni halls or student housing aren’t the nicest places to be living in. It can be hard to make these places feel homely, especially when you would rather be using your student loan on something useful like food (or TP tickets). However, chances are you’re going to be spending a lot of time in your room so I’ve complied some ideas on how to make your uni room feel a little bit more like yours.

If you’re unsure where to start, my top tip is to reflect on what you love about your room back home

Budget is a key thing when deciding to decorate, so picking the right places to buy from is important. Some of my favourite places to get decorations are IKEA and Flying Tiger. Both stores have such a good range of deco items and won’t break the bank.

However, good deals can be found anywhere and decorating your room is a great excuse to go round visiting all your favourite shops. There are plenty of gems around Exeter, for example the university often hosts poster sales right in the forum.

University life may never fully replace the feeling of home, but making your room your own can help make the transition smoother

If you’re still stuck on where to begin, my number one tip is to think about your room at home. What do you like about it? What do you wish you could bring from there? Use these thoughts to guide your decoration inspiration and try and create the same feeling of comfort. This will not only allow you to decorate your room in a way you’d enjoy but it also means your uni room will start to feel more and more like home.

And if all else fails, here is my short list of little things that can help bring a room together: pillows, blankets, fairy lights, posters/other wall deco, photos, plants, vases/pottery, books, records, and any other knickknacks. While living at university will never quite feel like living at home, there are ways to make moving away a little easier and creating an space just for yourself is a great one!
