Exeter City Council are calling for residents to celebrate Black History Month by raising awareness of Exeter’s black history within the local community.

Black History Month is celebrated annually each October, and this year it has additional resonance within the city following the Black Lives Matter movement.

Councillor Amal Ghusain has advocated for the necessity to amplify those voices closest to home, as a part of a large-scale scheme across the UK, Europe and the US to celebrate black history and to educate citizens about racial diversity.

Black History Month is celebrated annually each October, and this year it has additional resonance within the city following the Black Lives Matter movement.

The University of Exeter has a long-standing tradition of celebrating Black History Month. This year, preparations have involved working with the University’s African and Caribbean Society to organise a series of events spanning the whole of October. One event includes a seminar taking place on 26 October exploring the topic of allyship.

On a wider scale, Devon County Council have organised and publicised events throughout the month, including a large Zoom call in which participants are “welcome to present a poem or writing by someone you admire.”

This month has also seen the reopening of the Royal Albert Memorial Museum which is currently showing two interviews with black artists. Their work ranges from personal experiences of racism in art to celebrations of cultural differences in society.
