Album Review: Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s IC-01 Hanoi

It had been 6 months since our ‘Ffunny Ffriends’ Unknown Mortal Orchestra released their last full-length album, the contemplative and empathetic Sex and Food, and a further three years since they released the bright, brilliant, and vulnerable Multi Love, which rocketed the band to critical acclaim. As a long-time fan of the psychedelic group, I […]

Starter Pack: Modern Psychedelia

Having grown up in a very musical family, 60s-70s rock music has always been a big part of my life, especially the late 60s Woodstock/Vietnam era psychedelic sounds such as Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, and Cream as well as Sgt Pepper-era Beatles. Since starting uni I have been progressively into more modern variants of Psychedelic […]

Album Review: Paramore – After Laughter

With the lead single of Paramore’s fifth LP revealed less than a month before the album’s release, there has been arguably little in the way of After Laughter’s promotion compared to other albums. Perhaps this calmer approach is mirrored in the album’s title, which suggests a more honest, emotive and potentially vulnerable piece in contrast […]

Laura Mvula in the Live Lounge, Exeter Phoenix

One by one each of the band members step onto the stage, and we’ve got an eclectic mix: and electric cello, a harp, and a trio of grinning backing vocalists alongside the staple bassist (who doesn’t struggle at all despite wearing sunglasses inside a darkened room), female guitarist, drummer, and an array of synthesisers. Laura […]

Radio One’s Big Weekend 2016: Five bands you can’t afford to miss – Saturday

You’ve been lucky enough to nab yourself tickets to one of the South-West’s most coveted music events of the summer, Radio One’s Big Weekend. You successfully manage to navigate your way to Powderham castle, avoiding being trampled by gaggles of screaming teenage girls and/or physically violated by stern-looking security guards. Now what? With three different […]

Cullen Omori – New Misery Review

New Misery is the debut effort of former Smith Western’s frontman, Cullen Omori. Those familiar with Omori’s former band will associate them with fuzzy, lo-fi riffs accompanied by catchy and energetic melody lines. In contrast, New Misery is a more polished, mature album focusing on a wealth of existential angst. Given its title and these […]

Ally Pally and the genius of Tame Impala

Kicking off shows with the longest, and definitely one of the standout tracks from last year’s Currents, “Let It Happen” is a bold move – especially when you shower the crowd with confetti on the very first song. But, for Tame Impala, this was just an indication that they were there to party. The bulk […]

As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell Group universities, we stand united against the Russell Group statement which declared ‘no detriment’ or ‘safety net’ policies not to be ‘appropriate’ or ‘necessary’ for students at this time.

Having listened to students at our universities, we are calling on the Russell Group to act compassionately and empathetically and to reconsider their stance on ‘no detriment’ politics for assessments this year.

Students deserve to be listened to.
