As the new academic year gets underway, it’s the perfect time to spotlight an Exeter-based charity making a significant impact on our community: St Petrock’s. Located in the heart of Exeter, this dedicated organisation is at the forefront of combating homelessness in the city, offering vital support and a lifeline to those in need.

Founded in 1990, St Petrock’s has a long history of providing help to people who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of losing their homes. Its mission is to prevent homelessness and support those who find themselves without a stable place to live. But what is key to St Petrock’s is not just its longevity, but its comprehensive strategy for addressing the multifaceted issues surrounding homelessness. They offer an array of support from practical measures to mental health services, working with service users on an individual level to help tackle their needs.

One of the key services St Petrock’s offers is its day centre on Cathedral Yard. This facility provides a safe and welcoming space where individuals can access essential services such as showers and toiletries, clothing, sleeping bags and other supplies. The centre also provides advice and support on housing, benefits, and employment, and offers weekly sessions with a trained mental health professional. For those who are rough sleeping, St Petrock’s specialised outreach team provide mobile support twice a day, serving hot drinks, cooked food and offering individual support for those in need.

They also offer support for those struggling to access benefits, offering personalised support through their welfare advice scheme. This is vital for those experiencing financial instability and for many, plays a vital role in helping them to avoid homelessness.

Students at the University of Exeter and in the wider community can engage with St Petrock’s in a variety of ways. St Petrock’s is always recruiting new volunteers, whether that be working in the kitchen or helping with their fundraising work.

Moreover, St Petrock’s is always looking for donations, be it clothing, non-perishable food, or money. These donations are crucial in sustaining the charity’s services and ensuring that it can continue to support those in need. Students and local residents alike are encouraged to contribute in whatever way they can.

As we embark on another academic year, St Petrock’s stands out as a reminder of the power of engaging with the local community. Supporting St Petrock’s, whether through volunteering, donations, or advocacy, is a meaningful way to engage with and contribute to those less fortunate.
