In Defence of the Arrowverse

Since its inception with Arrow in 2012, the CW’s Arrowverse has proven to have a staying power rarely associated with superhero shows, going from strength-to-strength in the past six years, whilst its rivals (such as the ill-fated Marvel Netflix shows) have come and gone. With the upcoming “Elseworlds” crossover set to feature Superman and introduce […]

Aquaman – Review

As a man who gave Justice League a one-star review and described Jason Momoa’s portrayal of Aquaman as ‘woefully underdeveloped, unengaging (and)… a complete bore’, it’s fair to say I wasn’t too excited about the protector of the deep getting his own solo movie. Sure enough, when the trailers came along they seemed pretty bad […]

Nativity Rocks! – Review

‘Jesus, Mary and Joseph, this nativity is a catastrophe, minus two stars’ quipped Alan Carr’s character in the excellent first instalment of this franchise; a sentiment shared by many real-life critics (myself included) in relation to 2014’s Nativity 3: Dude, Where’s My Donkey?. I am relieved to say this soft reboot is a huge improvement […]

Ralph Breaks the Internet – Review

For all its straight to video bargain bin sequels, Disney (outside of the Pixar subsidary) have not released a theatrical follow-up since the Rescuers Down Under in 1990. This is an important film, with second instalments for Frozen, Zootopia and god knows what else planned for the House of Mouse in the coming years. Which […]

Review – Widows

2018 has been a year of incredible casts, with the likes of Avengers: Infinity War and Ocean’s Eight featuring a who’s who of Hollywood A-listers. Widows boasts a similarly impressive ensemble (Jon Bernthal’s name isn’t on the poster and he’s the goddamn Punisher) with one key difference; Steve McQueen has opted for the best, rather […]

Review – Homecoming

Sam Esmail has done it again. After the success of Mr Robot – arguably the best show on TV – he has stepped into the director’s chair for all ten of these brilliantly-constructed episodes and proven himself to be one of the most creative individuals working in the entertainment industry. The look of Homecoming is […]

House of Cards, season 6 – Review

Harrowing drama, a protagonist lacking in morality and a ruthless firing – the story behind the scenes of House of Cards’ sixth series will likely be remembered far longer than the season itself. There is little left to say about the firing of Kevin Spacey – on an ethical level, it was obviously the correct […]

Daredevil: Season 3 – Review

13 episodes. 13 damn episodes. The obsession with this arbitrary number has certainly proved unlucky for the Netflix corner of the MCU. Even those who sat through 26 episodes of Harlem’s Hero and the mercifully shorter 23 episodes of a posh white brat not doing nearly enough fist-ing greeted their cancellation with a mild shrug and […]

A Counter Review of Justice League…

2017 has been an incredible year for superhero movies – Logan, Wonder Woman, Thor: Ragnarok, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spiderman: Homecoming and even The Lego Batman Movie have all delighted fans and critics alike setting the scene for what many hoped would the crème de la crème, Justice League. Despite a nightmarish development […]

Iconic Film Scenes: Volume 3

Iconic Film Scenes: Volume 3   6) The Church Scene (Kingsman: The Secret Service) The cult status of this iconic church massacre scene makes it easy to forget just how effectively it utilised the element of surprise on first viewing. Not only does the mission seem like routine reconnaissance but the choice of romantic/dramatic actor […]

As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell Group universities, we stand united against the Russell Group statement which declared ‘no detriment’ or ‘safety net’ policies not to be ‘appropriate’ or ‘necessary’ for students at this time.

Having listened to students at our universities, we are calling on the Russell Group to act compassionately and empathetically and to reconsider their stance on ‘no detriment’ politics for assessments this year.

Students deserve to be listened to.
