(Diss)pairing over my education

Scarlett Parr-Reid, Print Science Editor, shares her feelings of anxiety surrounding her dissertation deadlines I have always been astounded by the ability of past me to be overly ambitious and make decisions which I would later regret. I mean, writing one 6000-word dissertation is not enough, right? How about two? Having written one and enduring […]

The Participation Paradox

For the majority of students in the College of Humanities, 10% of your module grade is on seminar participation. If you are a confident, self-assured individual then this is an easy way to boost your module mark, and could be the difference between a second-class and first-class degree. It’s become a key measure of academic […]

Mental Health and Social Media: do we spend too much time staring at screens?

The panic around social media use today is like the panic around Grand Theft Auto in the noughties, video-nasties in the eighties and the development of the printing press back before people knew what penicillin was. Stupid and petty, silly and unfounded, peddled by the kind of people who can’t handle change. It would all […]

Study drugs debunked

Cognitive enhancement is something that many of us would have thought about. Sat at the desk staring at a blank word document – wouldn’t it be great to have those assignments done better and quicker! In this endeavour some resort to caffeine, while others prefer exercise, meditation, or all three. In the meantime, some try […]

Is cannabis a healthy high?

Last week, bored and looking for something to distract us from the tedium of dissertation research, my housemate and I watched a movie. It’s a black and white movie that was made in 1936, famously called: Reefer Madness (formerly known as Tell Your Children). The film has gained notoriety in recent years for its hyperbolic, […]
