Corbyn

Thank Corbyn for the Youth’s Political Resurrection, not Tuition Fee Promises.

Thursday 8th June 2017. Was this the day that the youth made their voices heard within the political world? Was this the first time for many years that young people changed the landscape of British politics? Was this the time that the ‘disillusioned millennials’ finally stepped up and had their say? These were all questions […]

The Brexit Election

Theresa May has a comical aversion to giving a straight answer. For a long time, her only public pronouncements on Brexit were slogans: ‘Brexit means Brexit’ and, when challenged on whether it would be a hard or soft Brexit, the particularly laughable ‘Red, White, and Blue Brexit’. In January, she gave the public its clearest […]

Snap Election 2017- the round up

On Tuesday morning, the Prime Minister announced that she would be calling for an early General Election to take place on the 8th of June. This came as quite a surprise to both MPs and the public, as Theresa May had stated repeatedly in the past that she had no intention of calling for an […]

‘It is genocide, in every sense of the word’ – an interview with Oz Katerji

Oz Katerji is a journalist and filmmaker known among Middle East specialists for his comprehensive knowledge and sharp analysis. His current focus is on the Syrian crisis, and he was recently in the media for protesting at a speech made by Jeremy Corbyn at a Stop the War Coalition event. Despite having begun around five years ago, […]

Anti-establishment politics: a threat to capitalism?

With the fall of communism in 1989, theorists such as Francis Fukyama professed an end to ‘history’, a new era of politics for the twenty-first century, as humanity finally abandoned its expensive ideological struggle. Whilst politics has typically been a struggle of world views, today’s politics seems purely to be capitalist-oriented, parties geared towards winning […]

An interview with John McDonnell MP: On Corbyn and coups

Disclosure: I am an Owen Smith activist; I made no effort to hide this during the interview. The organiser also knew this to be true before the interview A deluge of applause rushed over the rouge pews of the packed out theatre, the acclamation rolling down to the lectern where John McDonnell stood, in the spirit of […]

Poppies or politics: What do we remember?

At what level does respect start? It was a question thrown at Jeremy Corbyn repeatedly last week; after laying his wreath at the Cenotaph, on Remembrance Sunday, many claimed that he did not bow deeply enough. An ex-Tory Defence Minister Sir Gerald Howarth called him an embarrassment to the country, while The Sun’s front page […]

As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell Group universities, we stand united against the Russell Group statement which declared ‘no detriment’ or ‘safety net’ policies not to be ‘appropriate’ or ‘necessary’ for students at this time.

Having listened to students at our universities, we are calling on the Russell Group to act compassionately and empathetically and to reconsider their stance on ‘no detriment’ politics for assessments this year.

Students deserve to be listened to.
