Gamers need to grow up

Recently twitter was all about “Nintendogate” as developer Zoe Quinn interpreted dialogue from upcoming Wii U game, Paper Mario: Colour Splash. The dialogue in question is from a group in the game called the “Five Fun Guys” where someone’s career will be in ruins, and predicts the newspapers will call it “Shufflegate: Exposed” (because of […]

Nintendo cinematic universe

In an interview with the popular Japanese newspaper Asahi News, Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima indicated that the company is considering selling the intellectual property rights of some of its most beloved characters, to film studios in an attempt to conquer the big screen. During the interview Kimishima qualified this by stating that in order to […]

Retro Rewind

There is nothing more gloriously and indulgently naff than a trip down memory lane with your favourite retro games. Nothing can prepare you for the feeling when you load up the game that defined your many childhood days spent indoors, when you would sit hunched too close to the TV screen, fighting your brother for […]

It ain’t over till it’s game over

As you start up a brand new game, you begin a journey into another world; a whole new dimension just waiting to be explored. You go through the usual rigmarole of finding out what your aims are, what the X button does, or what flimsy pretence has Nintendo concocted this time for yet another run-around […]

Sequel-ation: 3D Super Mario

Video game series don’t get any more iconic than Mario. Initially appearing in 1981’s Donkey Kong, Nintendo’s portly plumber has enjoyed monumental success for 3 and a half decades now and is arguably the mascot of the gaming industry as a whole. The Mario series now has sales in excess of 509 million and consists […]

Sequel-ation: Luigi’s Mansion

Halloween isn’t really about being scared. Not anymore least; it’s a time to embrace what we normally find scary, to mock the terrifying, to shine a light under the bed and realise it wasn’t a monster but merely your cat, and then have a good old laugh about it. That sense of relief you get […]

What’s NX-t for Nintendo?

With ever-dwindling third-party support and the feeble offerings of another Mario Tennis game and that Animal Crossing-Amiibo title, which came from this year’s seriously overhyped digital event at E3; it’s safe to say that it’s not exactly been the best year for Nintendo. In particular, the passing of company president and gaming legend, Satoru Iwata, was […]

Standing the test of time: retro games

Tom Crawley remembers some of his favourite childhood games while asking if they can really stand up to their modern successors. Anyone familiar […]

As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell Group universities, we stand united against the Russell Group statement which declared ‘no detriment’ or ‘safety net’ policies not to be ‘appropriate’ or ‘necessary’ for students at this time.

Having listened to students at our universities, we are calling on the Russell Group to act compassionately and empathetically and to reconsider their stance on ‘no detriment’ politics for assessments this year.

Students deserve to be listened to.
