Super Bowl 51: psychology and human endeavour

Tom Brady, the New England Patriots quarter-back, is defeated. His head hangs and his shoulders are slumped. The Patriots are 20-0 down in the second quarter, falling victim to an efficient Atlanta Falcons team. The image is now iconic; it showed how a man at his lowest ebb rose from the depths of despair, trumping […]

Morgan Schneiderlin and the death knell of footballing tradition

Outrage. Fury. Bewilderment. No, we’re not talking about the pervasive reaction to Donald Trump’s recent Presidential victory. We’re talking about Morgan Schneiderlin’s heinous crime against football – opting for the no.2 to adorn the back of his shirt. He tried to make light of it, explaining that his name was already too much of a […]

The failure of Jürgen Klinsmann’s American dream

It was meant to be the appointment to  herald a new dawn for American soccer, but the sun only flirted with emergence and earlier this month Jurgen Klinsmann’s time in charge of the U.S. Men’s national team came to a lamentable end. The German coach was charged with fulfilling the desire naturally latent within everything […]

Exeter City held by Luton

Exeter City were held to a 0-0 draw by Luton Town in a game of very few chances, reflecting the fine margins upon which League Two is balanced. A bitterly cold Saturday afternoon saw both sides fail to warm up in the first half. Exeter’s Pierce Sweeney came the closest in breaking the stale deadlock […]

Gary Lineker and outrage culture gone mad

Gary Lineker’s fundamentally humane and compassionate comment on the migrant crisis sparked a craze of misguided and deplorable criticism, most notably from the notorious Sun, who called for his removal from BBC’s Match of the Day. Branded, most crudely, as a ‘Leftie Luvvie’ by The Sun’s ever original team of alliterative geniuses, the ex-England international […]

Nice guys finish first?

Paris Saint German’s questionable start to the season has translated into a metamorphosis of apathy to excitement surrounding the eventual outcome of Ligue 1. Hanging onto the third rung, the reigning champions continue to falter in their attempts to climb the ladder; Monaco allowing Unai Emery’s men no purchase, whilst OGC Nice have opened up […]

The Sky Bet Football League Round Up – Gameweek 45

Burnley regain top-flight status The Premier League will welcome Burnley back next season as they finished their impressive, and ultimately efficient, campaign to regain top-flight status. A Sam Vokes header was enough to see off QPR at home; with Middlesbrough and Brighton playing each other on the final day, a two-point gap between the chasing […]

The Sky Bet Football League Round Up – Gameweek 44

The Sky Bet Championship A 3-1 win for Brighton over League One bound Charlton meant they are now level on points with both Burnley and Middlesbrough at the top of the league; the Borough were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Ipswich, and with Burnley winning on Friday night, all three clubs are […]

Why are there so many injuries in the Premier League?

Premier League teams boast impressive medical resources: team doctors, physiotherapists, physical trainers, nutrition experts and state-of-the-art equipment. Stoke City’s Shaqiri said that whilst at Inter Milan he was sent to a “miraculous healer who lived in the mountains”, whereas at the Britannia, “there are seven physiotherapists, who will examine me every day”. Yet, injuries still remain […]

Men’s Lacrosse 1s lose out 9-8 to Bath

In a tight encounter, the Men’s Lacrosse 1s agonisingly lost 9-8 to Bath University at Duckes Meadows. In a fiercely contested game, it was Bath who started brightest; a scramble in front of the goal resulted in the ball somehow finding its way over the line. Bath doubled their lead after a string of saves […]
