Devon is heaven!

For those who want to see that for themselves, here are four ideas for day trips in and around Devon and Somerset, all accessible by train or bus in less than two hours.

Just a short 20-minute journey by train or bike, the quayside town of Topsham makes for a quick and easy escape from Exeter.

Topsham

Starting with the location nearest to Exeter, Topsham is a small, quayside town just 20 minutes away by train, or around the same time by bike. Peruse down the high street leading to the quay and sure to stop at The Topsham Bookshop. Sit down for toasties made with local chutneys at The Café! When you get to the quay, you won’t miss the three-floor Topsham Quay Antiques store perfect for browsing.

Totnes stands out as a top destination for second-hand shopping.

Totnes

Totnes is a particular favourite for second-hand shopping. From charity shops, vintage stores and record and bookshops with the most unique pre-loved selection, I have never left Totnes empty-handed. Weaving in and out of independent shops and cafes, you are met with the town’s warm and friendly community. Kommüne Koffee Shack serves coffee from the hard-to-miss campervan parked inside the café, also hosting local artists and DJs. Find vintage Levis and jewellery stands at the Market Square on Fridays and Saturdays. Wander to the end of the street for a scenic riverside walk.

You’ll need more than one day to experience everything Bristol has to offer.

Bristol

There is something for everyone in Bristol! Arnolfini, a riverside gallery, is perfect for contemporary art. March up Cabot’s tower for beautiful views of the city, then down to Clifton – to Primrose Café for lunch or Steam for a cheap pint. To browse, Gloucester Road is one of Europe’s longest for independent shops. Later in the day, Strange Brew do fantastic live music and Thekla Thursday is unmissable for an indie-themed night out. One day trip may not cover it all!

Dartmouth

You can reach Dartmouth in under two hours, getting the train to Totnes and then a bus from there. A 7-minute walk from the stop is Café Alf Resco (yes, the space is intentional), a charming spot to head to for lunch before wandering down to the River Dart for a walk. On a day with good weather, you can kayak, paddleboard or take a boat trip here too!

Heading to these spots on the weekends this spring may be the perfect break from studies, or even just to get out and explore beyond Exeter.
