An Interview with Newton Faulkner

It’s been almost 12 years since the release of Newton Faulkner’s double-platinum debut album Hand Built By Robots, and in that time he’s had one heck of a journey. Supporting John Mayer, starring as Johnny in the American Idiot stage show, another UK Number 1 album, and appearing on stage with a 30 foot, 3 […]

Live Review: Exeter Contemporary Choir’s Christmas carol concert

Nothing gets you in the Christmas spirit quite like a carol concert, and the University of Exeter Contemporary Choir certainly delivered an enjoyable evening of Christmas, modern and unexpected songs.

Album Review: Echo & The Bunnymen – The Stars, The Oceans & The Moons

In the 4 years since the release of their last studio album, the fairly well-received Meteorites, Echo & the Bunnymen have not stayed quiet.  They have toured extensively,  released a new live album, and outraged many fans when they announced they would be rescheduling a show in the Birmingham Symphony Hall due to it clashing with […]

Live Review: DMA’s at Exeter Phoenix

A week of stunning, sunny weather across Exeter and the UK meant Exeter Phoenix was a glowing place to visit on a Tuesday evening – and not just because of the assembly of sunburns. A couple hundred eager music fans aggregating in one of Exeter’s favourite music venues, anticipating the arrival of Sydney’s newest up-and-coming […]

EP Review: Amber Grace – Legends, Myths and Lies

Comparisons, when used to describe music, can often be a blessing or a curse. Those who are named in the same light as big stars are useful in grabbing the attention of an existing audience, but a prospect can often find themselves shackled to that artist. Hailing from the town of Chippenham, Wiltshire in the […]

EP Review: Declan Welsh – Alright

With the festival season in full flow, T in the Park – although as muddy as a duck puddle – certainly did not disappoint. With Saturday headliner Calvin Harris less than an hour away, a friend and I stumbled upon (literally, after a few cans of Tennent’s) a smaller stage on the way to the […]

Album Review: The Strokes – Future Present Past EP

After announcing themselves onto the world stage in 2001 with their prosperous debut album Is This It, The Strokes have been on quite the musical journey. With a hard act to follow, the New York City quintet have never quite managed to hit the musical heights of their previous projects; often owing to attempts at switching […]

An Untrained Musician: An Interview with Battles

The American experimental rock band Battles are a group that refuse to be restricted to just one genre. Post-rock, math rock and art rock have been just a few labels used to describe their music, but however you label, they have found great success in the process with an impressive CV, even for a band […]

Album Review: Gregory Porter – Take Me To The Alley

An out-of-fashion album, but that is entirely the appeal. The rise of Californian jazz vocalist Gregory Porter over the past half a decade has been out of sync with the musical scene to say the least, however that is the exact secret to his success. With a seemingly ever present beaming smile, his self-labelled “jazz-hat” […]

As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell Group universities, we stand united against the Russell Group statement which declared ‘no detriment’ or ‘safety net’ policies not to be ‘appropriate’ or ‘necessary’ for students at this time.

Having listened to students at our universities, we are calling on the Russell Group to act compassionately and empathetically and to reconsider their stance on ‘no detriment’ politics for assessments this year.

Students deserve to be listened to.
