Januhairy – this isn’t going to cut it

Januhairy – this isn’t going to cut it As January drew to a close, so too did the aptly named ‘Januhairy’: a campaign created by Exeter student Laura Jackson that has garnered international media attention as women pledged to stop removing their body hair for the month of January. The intention of the campaign was […]

Sierra Burgess is a Loser: Review

The trailer for one of Netflix’s most recent teen romcoms, Sierra Burgess Is A Loser, caught my attention. A protagonist, and actor (Stranger Things’s Shannon Purser), who does not fit the traditional body expectations that so many leading ladies in this genre (and indeed, visual media in general) adhere to. And because this movie excited […]

Number of young male sufferers from eating disorders soars

Societally deemed a typically feminine mental health issue, the world of eating disorders is generally seen as one unrelatable to men. Freddie Flintoff, a former cricketer, recently described the moment he came close to speaking out about his eating disorder during a team meeting with a dietitian. The dietitian later remarked that she could not imagine anyone […]

Why we should be talking about Body Image

The way we perceive our bodies has become more and more complicated in the age of social media., We are surrounded by images of bodies, plastered across social media, magazines, newspapers, buses, train stations. It is becoming impossible to escape these images, which makes it even harder to not perceive the heavily photo-shopped and altered […]

Exeter Embraces: A New Body Image Movement

Exeter Embraces are two words I hope are on everyone’s lips by the end of the year. What is Exeter Embraces I hear you say? It is a movement set up by Adelaide-born Erasmus student Harriet Iles. Its aim? Encourage Exeter students (that does include you too, boys) to uphold the values of body diversity, […]

Life in plastic, it’s fantastic

My cousin hacked off the hair of hers, convinced it would grow back. A friend of mine accidentally welded the plastic strands to some hair curlers, and another pulled the head off of hers completely. Personally, I was sick on mine on a particularly awful car journey – her shiny blonde waves were never quite […]

‘Anorexia is narcissism’? I can’t stomach this

F ollowing Joan Bakewell’s opinion that growing rates of eating disorders among teenagers is a ‘sign of narcissism’, this veteran broadcaster has admitted to causing ‘enormous upset’ and has apologized. But is Bakewell really remorseful about what she said or does she just want the public back on her side? I think, at one point […]

Victoria’s Secret: The Angels have landed

Just last week, the American lingerie giant Victoria’s Secret held its 20th annual fashion show, and, as per usual, social media blew up because of it. Just as inevitably as S Club 7 being played at Cheesy Tuesdays, so too was the outpouring of comments, both positive and negative, as the world and his Instagram-filtered […]

As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell Group universities, we stand united against the Russell Group statement which declared ‘no detriment’ or ‘safety net’ policies not to be ‘appropriate’ or ‘necessary’ for students at this time.

Having listened to students at our universities, we are calling on the Russell Group to act compassionately and empathetically and to reconsider their stance on ‘no detriment’ politics for assessments this year.

Students deserve to be listened to.
