The Best of the BAFTA shorts at Exeter Phoenix

On Tuesday evening, a packed Studio 74 at the Phoenix sat down to watch the last year’s BAFTA shortlist for best short film and animated short film. Of course, as always at these events, there’s one thing on people’s minds; the future. Which of these short filmmakers is going to make it big, break out […]

Review: Summer and Smoke @ Exeter Phoenix

Dicebox are back, and they’re bringing Tennessee Williams to the Exeter Phoenix. Following her directorial debut with the company, in their first production, Plucked , a dark comedy based on Williams’ and Sarah Kane, Anastasia Bunce, along with Assistant Director James Joseph have taken on Summer and Smoke. Bunce’s directorial style is one of the […]

Review: Plucked @ Exeter Phoenix

Veganism seems to be a topic which is frequently joked about, with the stereotype of the militant and preachy vegan dominating most conversations about a lifestyle free of animal products. Although DiceBox’s first production, Plucked, has not marketed itself as ‘vegan theatre’, primarily focusing on the story of its mute protagonist, the troubled 12 year […]

Review: Next Thing @ Exeter Phoenix

We live in an age where climate change, terrorism, suicide rates, gender and confidence issues are discussed as much as what type of tea one would like in the afternoon. For a young person, it is difficult to know where to fit in this chaotic modern world. In their touring play, ‘Next Thing’, the award-winning […]

Review: Brexitannia

On March 24th, as part of their ‘Right Now’ season of documentaries, the Phoenix screened Brexitannia. On the same day, an anti-Brexit really, ‘Devon for Europe’, was taking place on the streets of Exeter town centre. In response, a number of pro-Brexit citizens took to the other side of the road in counter-protest, creating what […]

Live Review: JAWS @ Exeter Phoenix

I would be peddling mistruths if I was to say that I was an avid listener of JAWS before heading into Phoenix last Sunday. I heard the name mentioned a few times, and had seen gigs advertised but had never really got into them. However fortunately for me a friend recommended them the day before […]

Paper Hearts and Holograms: An Interview with Hunter and the Bear’s Will Irvine

With the release of their latest album Paper Heart earlier this year, Hunter and the Bear have taken the UK by storm; from their humble beginnings playing covers in small university venues to their 14-date tour this November around England and Scotland, the band are going from strength to strength. However, this does not diminish […]

Live Review: The Amazons @ Exeter Phoenix

The four-piece from Reading have been making waves since they crashed on to the music scene in 2014, but 2017 has been a big year for them, as they’ve been included in the BBC’s Sound of 2017 and MTV’s Brand New 2017 lists, and named a band to listen to in 2017 by NME, The […]

As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell Group universities, we stand united against the Russell Group statement which declared ‘no detriment’ or ‘safety net’ policies not to be ‘appropriate’ or ‘necessary’ for students at this time.

Having listened to students at our universities, we are calling on the Russell Group to act compassionately and empathetically and to reconsider their stance on ‘no detriment’ politics for assessments this year.

Students deserve to be listened to.
