Guild to restructure ExTunes

The Guild has announced substantial reforms to ExTunes, which has raised concerns amongst committee members of the ExTunes Council. Last Wednesday (15 May), committee members of the ExTunes Student Council were told that the student group will go through a significant restructuring in August. The Guild has concluded that ExTunes in its current format does […]

ExTunes Live @ The Old Firehouse 16/10/16

As the week four slump set in, a trip to the Old Firehouse for an ExTunes live event was exactly what the doctor ordered. Having not yet ventured to the Firehouse, although having heard virtually everyone I’d met at university rave about it, I was not disappointed; humongous pizza and gorgeous cider meant this place […]

ExTunes at the Old Firehouse 18/09/16

It’s the Sunday of Freshers’ Week, and something isn’t quite right. It’s not a raging hangover (surprisingly), nor is it a powerful sense of dread at the thought of lectures tomorrow. Something’s been missing from my life for weeks now – and I just don’t know what. Later that evening, nestled comfortably in a familiar […]

Live Review – ExTunes Live at the Firehouse 25/9/16

As an iconic venue for live music, I entered the Old Firehouse with high expectations for the night’s musical acts. Flaws Above were set to perform a never before seen purely acoustic set, stripping back original songs to their core. The atmosphere was building, and casual pizza-eaters quickly dispersed to leave a small crowd of […]

ExTunes at the Old Firehouse, 06/03/16

The dim lights of Firehouse were set ablaze on Sunday night, 6 February, as student bands and singers took to the stage for ExTunes. Acapella group Madrigals opened the night with a unique twist on the student music scene. The entire set was a quaint throwback to the years of yore, and was further embellished […]

ExTunes at The Old Firehouse 31.01.16

Pizza? Of course. Cider? Yep. Music? Don’t mind if I do. I’m tucking into that final slice of pulled pork and barbecue goodness, and, in the background, the guitar chords are starting up. It’s Sunday night, and that can only mean one thing: ExTunes is back, showcasing the best and brightest of student talent. The first […]

ExTunes at the Old Firehouse, 24/01/16

Opening the Old Firehouse’s bolthole stage last Sunday was Kathy Giddins.  Bringing just a ukulele and her confidently soaring voice onto stage, she had the respectable-sized crowd captivated in no time.  Her massive vocal range took us through her own songs, covers and parodies, including One Direction’s ‘Perfect’ in which she changed the word “perfect” […]

ExTunes Christmas Party at the Old Firehouse, 6/12/15

With its candles, decorations, world-famous pizza and snug atmosphere, is there any better place to spend a December night than the Old Firehouse? Last Sunday was a cracker of a musical night for students and locals alike. First up was Sam England with his own unique brand of alternative folk. He didn’t ruthlessly command attention but […]

ExTunes at the Old Firehouse, 29/11/15

As the nights get progressively darker and colder, taking refuge in the Old Firehouse becomes more and more appealing, especially with the live music on a Sunday night. This week there was a veritable feast for the ears (and the mouth, thanks to the BBQ Pulled Pork pizza): Acoustic sets! Musical Theatre! Acapella! There was […]

ExTunes at the Old Firehouse, 22/11/15

On a cold November day, the prospect of relaxing with a good pizza and good music at the Firehouse got me through the inevitable Sunday boredom. I was not disappointed in the slightest. The opening acoustic performance from Daisy Vaughan, alongside the recommended Cajun chicken pizza, left me with that warm fuzzy feeling you crave […]

As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell Group universities, we stand united against the Russell Group statement which declared ‘no detriment’ or ‘safety net’ policies not to be ‘appropriate’ or ‘necessary’ for students at this time.

Having listened to students at our universities, we are calling on the Russell Group to act compassionately and empathetically and to reconsider their stance on ‘no detriment’ politics for assessments this year.

Students deserve to be listened to.
