Album Review: Newton Faulkner – The Best of Newton Faulkner… So Far

Newton Battenburg Faulkner has long been a ray of genuine guitar-toting sunshine in the UK music scene. His percussive guitar style, impressive vocal range, and lovable on-stage personality has garnered Faulkner a loyal and committed following, and so it is with great anticipation that one settles down to enjoy the 31-track odyssey that is The […]

British academic given life sentence in UAE

A University of Exeter alumnus has been given a life sentence in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), following charges of spying on behalf of the UK government. Hedges maintains that he was in the UAE undertaking research on the country’s security strategy for his PhD at Durham University. Matthew Hedges, 31, is an Exeter resident […]

Abstinence and academia

A night out at university can involve a lot of pressure – pressure to socialise, pressure to drink, and often pressure to look for something a little more… intimate. When Timepiece’s oversized clock ushers in the early hours of the morning, it can be a little discomforting – as you look around the carnal, sweat-soaked […]

Review: Shotgun Theatre’s Little Shop of Horrors

Everyone loves a potted plant. They’re a great way to brighten up a room, bring a bit of life into your home; in fact, I’ve just invested in some myself. Now, however, I’m tempted to take them back to the shop – because if there’s one thing I’ve learned from Little Shop of Horrors it’s that your […]

Pre-fresh problems

When I’m drowning in the depths of revision, ploughing through the endless reams of seminar reading, or just sitting like some academically-inclined zombie – staring into space and pointedly pretending that dissertations are something that happens to other people – there is but one thing that can return a smile to my face. Surely, what […]

Google’s PHQ-9 Tests – combating increasing rates of mental health problems

As part of an initiative which sees the tech giant partnered with the USA’s National Alliance on Mental Illness, Google mobile searches for the terms “depression” and “clinical depression” will now present US users with the option to take a short, self-administered depression test. According to the Alliance, whilst one in five Americans are likely […]

Gold Idea taken down

A Gold Idea entitled “The Guild should buy a helicopter” was suspended on Monday 4 December and ultimately closed, following complaints about its promotion of views related to right-wing extremism. The Idea, which suggests what is presumed to be a humorous tone that “a Guild helicopter could be used to promote its education survey from […]

Review: ‘The Claim’ @ Bike Shed Theatre

A performer stands on stage, but the lights have yet to go down. He stands before the audience in silence, making eye contact, expression unreadable. Eventually, he speaks: “This is a place of performance, isn’t it?” The Claim follows its three characters – the claimant, the interpreter, and the interviewer – through the process of […]

Live Review: Newton Faulkner @ The Lemon Grove

If charm were a currency, then Newton Faulkner would be a rich man. Thankfully for our sakes it isn’t, and so he has to make music for a living – because the world would be a far darker place with less Newton in it. That said, I think he’d just go ahead and make music […]

As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell Group universities, we stand united against the Russell Group statement which declared ‘no detriment’ or ‘safety net’ policies not to be ‘appropriate’ or ‘necessary’ for students at this time.

Having listened to students at our universities, we are calling on the Russell Group to act compassionately and empathetically and to reconsider their stance on ‘no detriment’ politics for assessments this year.

Students deserve to be listened to.
