Halloween Fights Plastic

Paige Insalaco advises us on how to have a sustainable Halloween I think we can all agree that Halloween is one of the most entertaining holidays we partake in, however, the sustainability of the tradition is being called into question given the current climate crisis we’re in.  One of the most iconic elements of Halloween, […]

The Ghosts of Christmas Present: The Darkness behind Dutch and Belgian Traditions

Christmas is recognised across the globe as being the holiday of giving and of love. It is a time where people put aside their differences, come together and has quite literally paused wars in its honour. For this reason, it comes as a shock that in certain countries in Europe these traditions involve rather racist […]

The Physics of Santa

Father Christmas, Santa or Coke’s best marketing campaign I think we can all agree does an exceptional job every year of delivering all those goodies to all of those people. But how does he do it? What problems does he face? Is his belly like a bowl full of jelly? Hmmm, well, short of asking […]

The joy of Christmas spirit

I love Christmas. I really do think it is the season to be jolly, to deck the halls, and tell all your family you love them, just because. I will accept no scrooges at this most wonderful time of the year. The biggest Christmas we’ve ever had was 21 people squeezed around a table For […]

Homeward bound

As the evening now starts at half three, plunging Exeter into near-darkness as soon as hungover students drag themselves out of bed, Christmas is undeniably close. And with it comes the thought of getting a train home, the cost of which is sure to make anyone wince as the last of the student loan for […]

Home Is Where The Food Is

I was raised the right way by my parents. I know that’s a bold claim, but I was raised with good values; a love of food and a deep appreciation for anything that’s free. For most students that’s what home means: free food. I won’t lie, my parents are great cooks and I enjoy the […]

How to travel solo as an introvert

Recently I did the Myers-Briggs self-questionnaire. This indicates your psychological preferences; and yes, to my surprise, I am in fact an introvert. There’s a common misconception that introverts are antisocial. However, being an introvert simply means that you get most of your energy from being alone – you might love seeing friends and going to […]

Merry Exe-mas: A Review of Exeter’s Christmas Market

As a Christmas baby, I’ve always associated the switching on of lights and wafts of cinnamon borne on the headier scent of pine with the absolutely, unquestionably, definitively best time of the year. Mixed with a dangerous tendency towards materialism and comfort eating, this adoration of the festive season makes German markets like our own […]

International columnist: the importance of family visits

With the first term slowly coming to an end, many have speculated that at least half of the rooms in Duryard Halls residence will be absent of their occupants soon. Well, at least I can say that I am confident enough about this for these four particular accommodation buildings: Creedy House, Bovey House, Avon House, […]

As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell Group universities, we stand united against the Russell Group statement which declared ‘no detriment’ or ‘safety net’ policies not to be ‘appropriate’ or ‘necessary’ for students at this time.

Having listened to students at our universities, we are calling on the Russell Group to act compassionately and empathetically and to reconsider their stance on ‘no detriment’ politics for assessments this year.

Students deserve to be listened to.
