Live Review: Matt Maltese @ Thekla

With the recent arrival of The Flame, the posthumously published collection of poetry by Leonard Cohen, I feel like I am surely not alone in having a Cohen-shaped hole open up again. Around about the same time, I revisited my favourite album of this year, Matt Maltese’s Bad Contestant. You can join the dots. At […]

Live Review: Will Hoge @ Bristol Thekla

It’s a familiar cliché, usually shared between two acquaintances and probably an aux cord, to “love all genres- well, except maybe country!”. Perhaps to label such a statement as “blasphemous” might seem a tad hyperbolic and, in the interest of journalistic transparency, there is an inevitable bias that lies with my super-fan mother. Regardless, Will […]

Live Review: Liam Fray @ Bristol Thekla

“Liam! Liam! Liam!” Not many artists can be late to their own gig and be greeted with a supportive chant from the crowd. Maybe they all counted themselves lucky they weren’t waiting over an hour for Rihanna. Though considering no one was moving it was easy to begin to get restless as the heat from […]

“I like my musicians drunk”: An Interview with The Orwells

In March, The Orwells are heading out for their first UK tour since the February release of third album Terrible Human Beings, a more grown up album which has improved upon previous efforts and brought them into some new territory.   Of the title, they said “it’s kind of an ode to our reputation, and […]

Live Review: The Hunna – Thekla, Bristol

The Hunna are blowing up. After a summer of festivals including Reading and Leeds, and the holy grail of the Radio 1 playlist, the debut album has arrived and they have embarked on a tour of the UK. I had seen The Hunna at Reading; they produced the most exciting daytime set that I witnessed […]

Goons, Country Classics, The Occult – An Interview with All Them Witches

Bristol, Somerset. I descended the stairs of the ominous black ex-warship known during the colonial crusades as “Her Majesty’s Enslaver” – THEKLA. Huddled behind the stage in the galley of the vessel I found a gang of noble pioneering rockers from Nashville, USA (ex-British colony). They called themselves All Them Witches. As I gazed upon […]

Live Review: All Them Witches – Thekla, Bristol

It was 6:30pm on a Sunday in Brizzle, and the autumn sun was shining right in my eyes as I peered down at Google Maps. Where was Thekla? Somewhere by the river, okay. Plodding on, some church bells stared ringing from somewhere – apt, really, as I turned the corner and, like some spooky cartoon, my […]

An interview with Lawson

Lawson are currently with Robbie Williams on stage in Melbourne, singing a Take That classic. Shortly, they’re performing in their own November tour, recently having released a new EP track and having a new album in the works for next year. It’s undeniably safe to say it’s a good time to be a Lawson fan. The […]

An interview with Blonde

Meet Blonde, aka Adam Engelfield and Jacob Manson, the duo who have been picking up momentum as they take the electro-house music scene by storm. Their energetic, empowering dance music is impossible to resist; their sound stems from their university days where they both discovered their love for house music. Adam attended Bristol University, which […]

Gabrielle Aplin at Bristol Thekla, 01/10/15

Gabrielle Aplin Thekla, Bristol 1 October 2015   Bristol’s Thekla is glittering as Wiltshire singer-songwriter Gabrielle Aplin plays a sold-out show. The night begins with Dublin-born Sample Answer taking the crowd through material from his debut EP Good Boy. With the vibe of a poetry slam jazzed up with reverb and guitar loops, the up-and-coming singer is […]
