Art + Lit = Comics

While superhero films have been enjoying unprecedented success at the box office in the last decade, the source of characters like Iron Man, Batman and Spider-Man remains culturally underappreciated, particularly in Britain. The comic book, or graphic novel, is often viewed critically as empty fluff for children. However, it is an art form full of […]

What probably happens in Justice League

Here we are again, the DCEU has paraded another grisly few hours of cinema in front of us like a child with a crude drawing of a house. But rather than putting it on the fridge, I’m going to shit all over it because I have no feelings of paternal love for DC, and their […]

Review: Justice League

Justice League is not, strictly speaking, a bad film. It’s not awful. It’s not even terrible. Unfortunately, it’s not particularly good either – and it certainly doesn’t do justice to the expectations of both Warner Bros. and any still hopeful DC fans out there. With the lowest-grossing opening weekend of any DCEU film, it seems […]

Review: Suicide Squad

Without a doubt, Suicide Squad was a contender for the most hotly anticipated film of the year; an all-star cast including Margot Robbie and Will Smith, brilliant trailers – everyone was set for excellence. Unfortunately, we do not quite get excellence. To say the film is terrible would be too harsh, it’s just too middle-of-the-road for […]

Sequel-ation: The Batman Arkham Games

The year was 1939: Frank Sinatra had just made his recording debut, a plucky little film known as The Wizard of Oz had just seen its premiere in Hollywood, and through Detective Comics #27 the world was introduced to Batman. Ever since this initial appearance, Batman has featured in everything from movies and TV shows, […]

Review: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

It’s one of the oldest questions that you will find on a playground – who would win in a fight, Batman or Superman? Nearly three years since its announcement and one of the most anticipated films of the decade has finally hit the silver screen; pitching two of the most iconic comic book and cultural […]

Sequel-ation: The Lego Games

Say what you will about the debate on whether we focus too much on materialism at Christmas, but one thing you can’t deny is that it is now a fundamental part of the holiday. I can’t speak for everyone, but in my experience; Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without the family gathering around for a round […]

As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell Group universities, we stand united against the Russell Group statement which declared ‘no detriment’ or ‘safety net’ policies not to be ‘appropriate’ or ‘necessary’ for students at this time.

Having listened to students at our universities, we are calling on the Russell Group to act compassionately and empathetically and to reconsider their stance on ‘no detriment’ politics for assessments this year.

Students deserve to be listened to.
