Vegan food in Exeter (Jasmine Payne)

Exeter’s food scene has fully embraced plant-based dining, offering a variety of options for vegetarians and vegans alike. From independent cafés to traditional pubs and trendy delis, the city is brimming with unique eateries that will impress even the most devoted meat-eaters. Whether you’re after a quick bite or the full wining and dining experience, Exeter has something to satisfy every craving — all while keeping things deliciously plant-based.

For the all-vegan experience, The Cheeky Vegan, is a must-visit.

For an all-vegan experience, The Cheeky Vegan opposite the Cathedral is a must-visit. They serve indulgent comfort foods like loaded fries, burgers, and milkshakes that you won’t believe are vegan (honestly, it’s heaven). Another fan favourite is Sacred Grounds, a trendy café in McCoy’s Arcade famed for its creative brunch options. My go-to is the Sacred Royale, which includes their popular poached ‘egg’ and ‘caviar’. If you love smoothie bowls and vegan waffles that you won’t be able to get enough of, this is the place for you.

Those looking for a more casual deli-style experience will love How On Earth Deli on South Street. It specialises in decadent plant-based cheeses, meats, and sandwiches, perfect for a takeaway treat. The quality of the food here cannot be understated — my visiting friend from home proclaimed that her sandwich was the best she’s ever had and we ended up making a return trip the following day. Yes, it’s that good.

For a less casual, sit-down meal, longstanding vegetarian restaurant Herbies serves wholesome dishes packed with punchy flavours and fresh veggies. The three bean chilli nachos, loaded with vegan sour cream and guacamole, never miss a beat. The Flat, another veggie favourite, is renowned for its delicious handmade vegetarian and vegan pizzas and calzones. What’s not to love? Just remember to book early.

Wagamama boasts almost half of their menu items as vegan.

If a classic English menu is more your style, even traditional pubs are catering to plant-based diets. The Mill on the Exe offers impressive vegan options, such as miso and chilli-glazed aubergine and plant-based burgers. For indulgent fast food that puts chains like KFC to shame, Eat the Bird offers an entire vegan menu with fried chik*n burgers that truly rival their meat counterparts.

Chain restaurants haven’t missed out on the wave either, and can be enjoyed by veggies and meat eaters alike. Cosy Club offers an extensive vegetarian and vegan menu, featuring my favourite aubergine and butterbean tagine. Wagamama boasts almost half of their menu items as vegan, including plant-based ramen, curries, and their famous vegan ‘chicken’ katsu curry. BrewDog is another top pick, offering an impressive selection of vegan options. Their 2-4-1 Vegan Mondays make plant-based dining even more accessible, with everything from their Beyond Meat burgers to buffalo cauliflower wings available as part of the impressive deal. So if you’re looking for those familiar favourites, Exeter has you covered.

Exeter has something to satisfy every craving!

For budget-friendly options when dining out isn’t “on the menu”, the University’s Super Saver Kitchen provides affordable plant-based dishes on campus from just £2.25. That way there’s no missing out; you can enjoy a tasty and sustainable meal without breaking the bank.

With so many delicious and versatile options, Exeter is a fantastic place for vegetarian and vegan foodies. Whether you’re after comfort food, fine dining, or a quick grab and go, the city has something to satisfy every craving.
