First Man – Review

First Man is a Chazellian study of obsession that is keen to understand the inner workings of Neil Armstrong. Ryan Gosling’s Armstrong is caught between his own personal dilemmas and the international space race during this sombre re-telling of the 1969 moon landing. Damien Chazelle’s intimate biopic puts American patriotism to one side as we […]

Do We Have the Right to Demand Refunds for Our Education?

Do students deserve compensation? This question has frequently been raised in recent weeks, as a result of the contact hours lost to industrial strike action. With some students having lost 75% of their contact hours, the desire for compensation is understandable. Dissertation students can’t access their supervisors, deadlines are getting pushed closer towards the exam […]

Review: Darkest Hour

With Darkest Hour, director Joe Wright thrillingly illustrates the political side of Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk by placing a momentous piece of history into the hands of Gary Oldman. Wright – who depicted the enormity of the Dunkirk evacuation in Atonement (2007) – delivers a remarkable cinematic history lesson that balances the difficulties of Churchill’s first […]

Pixar: the leading animation studio

You booze, you lose- Has Britain’s drinking culture gone too far?

“I learned it in England where indeed they are most potent in potting.” These words uttered in Othello convey the long and fabled relationship that we in this country have with alcohol. But even in his Elizabethan stupor, William Shakespeare couldn’t have anticipated the extent of Britain’s drinking culture today. This is something most freshers […]

As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell Group universities, we stand united against the Russell Group statement which declared ‘no detriment’ or ‘safety net’ policies not to be ‘appropriate’ or ‘necessary’ for students at this time.

Having listened to students at our universities, we are calling on the Russell Group to act compassionately and empathetically and to reconsider their stance on ‘no detriment’ politics for assessments this year.

Students deserve to be listened to.
